The December programme of the Chief Conductor Alexander Liebreich will open up with a surprising combination of the music by Antonio Vivaldi and Bohuslav Martinů. The chromatic and mysteriously dark Sinfonia by the Italian Baroque master sets the atmosphere for the Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani, one of the best works by Bohuslav Martinů. The Czech composer wrote it for the famed Basel Chamber Orchestra (and it’s conductor Paul Sacher) in the turbulent atmosphere of the year 1938, which is clearly reflected in the dramatic nature of the work. The second part of the concert will belong to the majestic Symphony No. 3 that Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy composed inspired by his trip to Scotland.
