Concerto for Percussion

28. únor 2022

Rudolfinum, 28 February 2022 at 7:30 p.m.

Kalevi Aho: Sieidi, Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra
Claude Debussy: La mer

Alexander Liebreich – conductor
Alexej Gerassimez – percussion

The performance of one of the world's best percussionists Alexej Gerassimez promises to be not only an exceptional listening experience, but also a spectacular show. It is not very often the stage of the Rudolfinum's Dvořák Hall is filled with all manner of both rhythmic and melodic percussion instruments which are used in contemporary Finnish composer Kalevi Aho's concerto for percussion and orchestra entitled Sieidi. This thrilling work with its almost ritualistic sound demands an athletic performance from its soloist, with movement around the whole front part of the stage, switching between instruments like the djembe and darbuka, known from African and Arabian music, and classic instruments of the European repertoire, like the marimba and vibraphone.

In the second half of the evening, PRSO Chief Conductor Alexander Liebreich will present La mer, an iconic work of musical impressionism in which French composer Claude Debussy transforms the orchestra into a palette of new colours, thus capturing the impression of the gently undulating and also turbulent element of water.
