Conductor Holly Mathieson of New Zealand, a leading artist of her generation, will lead the radio symphony players in presenting a programme comprised of works inspired by fairytales. It will open with the Fairytale Poem by Tatar-Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, whose 90th birthday will be commemorated by the whole musical world in 2021. Before the break we will also hear the lyrical song cycle Shéhérazade, in which Maurice Ravel set to music texts inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights by French poet Tristan Klingsor. The concert will culminate with an excerpt from the popular ballet Cinderella by classic Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.
