PRSO in the Rudolfinum – with phenomenal cellist Queyras
The artist-in-residence of the radio symphony players, Jean-Guihen Queyras of French Canadian origin, will travel to Prague despite the complicated circumstances and perform two compositions: Haydn's Concerto in C major and Tchaikovsky's Andante cantabile. PRSO will perform under the baton of its chief conductor Alexander Liebreich.

The impulse for writing the ballet Pulcinella came from Sergei Diaghilev, founder and director of the Ballets Russes. In order to liven up the repertoire, he dug up the Neapolitan folk work and spent a long time persuading Stravinsky – in the end successfully – to adapt the music by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. It is not often we encounter the sly lad by the name of Pulcinella on stages in the Czech Republic, so it is all the more extraordinary that we will be able to hear the suite from the music for this charming work.
Curiosity, diversity, flawless technique
Curiosity, diversity, flawless technique and intense concentration are what characterise the artistic expression of cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. He heeds the harmony between both musician and listener and the inner motivation of the composer.
He learned this approach from Pierre Boulez, with whom he had a long-lasting artistic partnership. Jean-Guihen Queyras will first perform the pivotal opus of the cello literature, Joseph Haydn's Concerto in C major from the 1760s, which is quite particularly connected to our country and the radio orchestra. This will be followed by the lyrical Andante cantabile, which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky originally wrote as a slow movement for his String Quartet No. 1.
The evening's finale
The evening's finale is reserved for Johannes Brahms' spectacular Variations on a Theme by Haydn. It premiered in 1873, when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by the author himself, and was an unprecedented success, which considerably boosted the composer's confidence.
Let us believe that the upcoming PRSO concert will also end in success, led by chief conductor Alexander Liebreich and broadcast live by the stations ČRo Vltava and Catalunya Rádio, to be reprised by ČRo D dur and stations in Sweden and Portugal, all with the presence of cameras.
