“Today I played Mahler’s Ninth Symphony again,” Alban Berg wrote in a letter to his wife. “The first movement is the best thing Mahler ever composed. It expresses an extraordinary love of the earth, for Nature. The longing to live on it in peace, to enjoy it completely, to the very heart of one's being, before death comes, as irresistibly it does.” The native from Kaliště near Humpolec composed his last completed symphony during the summer holidays of 1909 in his wooden cottage near the South Tyrolean village of Toblach, surrounded by idyllic nature. At that time he had already had the diagnosis of the heart disease that would eventually kill him. Mahler did not live to see the premiere of the work, under the direction of the conductor Bruno Walter, which is why it is connected with his premonition of his own death, interpreted as the conductor’s farewell to the world. The performance by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Liebreich promises one of the highlights of the season.
