The star of the next concert broadcast from the Vinohrady studio where the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra usually rehearses and records will be on the harp. First, though, stringed instruments will be the focus, performing the Partita that was composed by Bohuslav Martinů in Paris in 1931 and is brim-full of sparkling ideas. Leading Czech harpist Kateřina Englichová will then take the spotlight, performing Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings, a refined, poetic yet dramatic work by French composer Maurice Ravel. The harp also plays a key role in the evening’s final piece. It was this instrument that Igor Stravinsky entrusted with playing the stylised role of the lyre of the mythical Orpheus in the eponymous ballet that he wrote in collaboration with world-famous choreographer George Balanchine in Hollywood in the 1940s.
