Sylvain Cambreling, the Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, promises a combination of Central European and French music. He will open the programme with the song Jealousy, Janáček’s original discarded overture to the opera Jenůfa. The evening will continue with the Violin Concerto No. 2. Béla Bartók composed it shortly before World War Two broke out in his native Hungary, full of fear from the rise of fascism, from which he ultimately fled to the United States. The premiere of the work took place in 1939 in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. The soloist was the composer’s friend Zoltán Székely. In Prague, the soloist’s virtuoso role will be performed by the fantastic Finnish violinist, Elina Vähäla. The French conductor will conclude the evening with the music of Olivier Messiaen, to whom he has dedicated considerable space in his rich interpretational career. In Prague he will be presenting his spiritual composition L'ascension from the year 1933.
