Štěpán Lauda

I was born in Prague into a family of musicians. My mother was a pianist and, among other things, co-authored a piano method for secondary teacher-training schools.

Until recently, my father was a teacher at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and still performs as a double bassist and bass guitarist in several jazz ensembles. My brother played the piano but later switched to drums, which have remained his lifelong hobby.

I have played the violin since childhood and have remained faithful to the instrument ever since. I studied at the Elementary School of Music in Biskupská Street under Professor Novotný and later continued at the Prague Conservatory with Professor Štětina. I joined the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1990 and play in the second violin section.

What instrument do I play?

Although many beautiful instruments have passed through my hands, I still most enjoy playing a violin made by an old Czech master, which I have owned since I was fourteen. These may not be among the most valuable violins, but I still admire their balanced tone and rich sound.

What was my childhood dream?

As my surname might suggest, my childhood dream was to become a racing driver. Unfortunately, that never came to pass.

What do I enjoy?

I enjoy music. The life of a musician brings not only travel and many wonderful concerts, both at home and abroad, but above all the opportunity to meet fascinating musical personalities — soloists, conductors and composers alike. In my free time, I also enjoy reading motoring magazines and historical novels.
