Simon and Lenárd, Dvořák and Brahms, 13.4. at Rudolfinum
Bringing together the legacies of Brahms and Dvořák in one evening could hardly be more apt. There was enormous mutual respect between them and it is well known that Brahms helped the younger Dvořák by recommending him to the world-renowned publisher Simrock. The composers’ similar aesthetic outlooks are no less important. Both revered folk art, both were capable of spicing up their musical language with “exotic” folk and both were at their most distinctive in what was referred to as absolute music, based on pure expression and unburdened by non-musical elements.
You will have an opportunity to ponder their similarities and differences when the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra performs Brahms’ Concerto for Piano and Orchestra no. 2 in B major with soloist Jan Simon and Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony in D minor, both under the baton of principal conductor Ondrej Lenárd, in a season-ticket holders’ concert at the Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall on Monday 13 April.
Czech Radio Vltava will broadcast the concert live while a video recording will be available at socr.rozhlas.cz and on YouTube.
