Excursion into the world of musicals
On Monday 9 September the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and solo vocalists, among them students of the Prague International Conservatory, will record six melodies from the original Czech musical The Phantom of London.
The musical was the work of text author Michael Prostějovský, composer Radim Smetana and librettists Pavel Bár and Lumír Olšovský. The last of these also took on the role of director in the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava. The production premiered on May 16 this year.
What interests us at Czech Radio most, however, is music – and the musical’s score was composed by experienced television programming director, composer and trained oboist Radim Smetana. As he said in an interview for Právo newspaper: “… The Phantom of London is not just a collection of thrown-together songs. The final form has taken shape over the past ten years.” We can soon look forward to hearing his work on the Czech Radio airwaves.
