Ceremonial concert to honour war veterans and birth of Czechoslovakia

10. říjen 2012

It has become a tradition that the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (PRSO) takes part in ceremonial evenings at the Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall at the end of October in remembrance of the birth of Czechoslovakia and those who have fought and sacrificed their lives for their homeland. This year’s gathering will also mark the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the independent Czech and Slovak states.

The musical part of the evening will offer works by the Italian and French opera greats Verdi, Puccini, Massenet, Gounod, Leoncavallo and Donizetti, along with snippets of Suchoň’s opera Krútňava and Dvořák’s Rusalka. The PRSO will be conducted by Tomáš Brauner, while the solos will be performed by Adriana Kohútková, soloist with the opera of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, and Jaroslav Březina, soloist with the opera of Prague’s National Theatre.

The event is being organised by the JARY Civic Association and is being held under the auspices of the first deputy chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Přemysl Sobotka, the minister of culture, Alena Hanáková, and the archbishop of Olomouc and metropolitan of Moravia, Mons. Jan Graubner, as well as the head of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic, Prof. Milan Čič, and the deputy chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Ján Figeľ. Opening addresses will be delivered by two distinguished writers, Pavel Kohout and Ladislav Ballek.

The evening will culminate with the decoration of persons who, thanks to their heroic actions, have entered the consciousness of the Czech and Slovak publics.
