Romantic and impressionist works set for Dvořák Prague Festival

22. srpen 2012

The Dvořák Prague Festival began its fifth edition on 8 September, the birthday of the unique Czech composer. From 20:00 on Tuesday 18 September you can enjoy a concert featuring the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (PRSO) at the Rudolfinum – or in the comfort of your own home, thanks to a live broadcast on Czech Radio 3 Vltava.

The programme features works by four composers who were all born in the 19th century, although two were to become illustrious proponents of romanticism, while the other two – whose pieces can be heard after the interval – played key roles in the birth of impressionist music.

The conductor will be a rising star in the musical firmament, the Yerevan-born Sergey Smbatyan, 25. The solo will be performed by 26-year-old Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang.

PROGRAMME
Hector Berlioz: Roman Carnival, op. 9
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, op. 35
Ottorino Respighi: Fountains of Rome
Maurice Ravel: La Valse

During the interval the radio broadcast will feature an interview with a person who has been closely associated with the PRSO in recent times – principal conductor Ondrej Lenárd. He celebrated his 70th birthday at the start of September so the subject is a given: a look back at his life and musical career.
