Cello legend Mischa Maisky
The second day of the Český Krumlov festival belongs to a singer whom the PRSO has worked with repeatedly; the orchestra has appeared with Mischa Maisky both in the Czech Republic and on a tour of Japan.
Mischa Maisky studied at the Leningrad conservatory under Mstislav Rostropovich. He left the Soviet Union in 1970 and settled in Israel, where his studies continued under other great cellists, most notably Gregor Piatigorsky. Maisky’s career took off when he appeared at concert venues around the world, working with the most prestigious symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras and soloists. His rich recording catalogue, mainly for the label Deutsche Grammophon, features a number of interesting titles.
In Český Krumlov Maisky will perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C Major Op. 56 and Brahms’ Double Concerto in A Major Op. 102. He will be accompanied by his daughter, the pianist Lily Maisky, and the Korean violinist Sang-Hee Cheong. The PRSO, conducted by Holland’s Daniel Raiskin, will also perform Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture.
