Three times in Český Krumlov – with three stars! Ramón Vargas to appear at opening
The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (PRSO) will perform a most extraordinary role at the 20th Český Krumlov International Music Festival, where, as the ‘house’ orchestra, it will accompany three extremely prominent guests: Ramón Vargas (15. 7.), Mischa Maisky (16. 7.), and Plácido Domingo (20. 8.).
The excellent Mexican-born tenor Ramón Vargas will appear at the opening concert at the Brewery Garden at 8 P.M. on Friday, July 15, performing a selection of pieces by Italian and French Romantic composers. The concert, with Ondrej Lenárd conducting, will be broadcast live by Czech Radio 3 – Vltava.
Ramón Vargas received his first vocal training in Mexico City and in 1982, the same year he won the Carlo Morelli National Opera Competition, made his debut in Hayden’s opera Lo speziale in Moterrey. The singer made his international debut in 1992, when the Metropolitan Opera in New York engaged him to replace Luciano Pavarotti in the role of Edgard. The following year, Vargas appeared for the first time at Milan’s La Scala, taking the part of Fenton in Falstaff, conducted by Riccardo Muti. Today, he regularly appears at the world’s leading venues and is acknowledged as a concert tenor with a broad repertoire. Ramón Vargas has received numerous prestigious awards; for instance in 2000 the British magazine Opera Now named him their artist of the year, while that same year Austria’s Festpiele-Magazin described him as the world’s greatest opera singer. In 2001, he was presented with the ECHO Klassik Award for opera singer of the year.
