Prague Spring International Music Festival – and our Radio Orchestra
This year at the Czech Republic’s largest and oldest music festival, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (SOČR) will be performing in four concerts. We have already informed readers of the orchestra’s collaboration (also involving two concerts) with finalists in the violin category of the International Music Competition; other evening concerts will feature the following programmes:
Tuesday 18 May, Smetana Hall, Obecní dům, 8pm
George Enescu: Suite No. 1 in C major, Op. 9
Robert Schumann: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 54
Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30
conductor: Cristian Mandeal
soloist: Radu Lupu, piano
A former winner of the famous Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, this Romanian virtuoso, now residing in Switzerland, will perform the famous work by Robert Schumann, whose 200th anniversary we celebrate this year.
This concert will be recorded by Czech Radio 3 Vltava and broadcast on Saturday 29 May at 4.30pm, unfortunately without Schumann’s concerto (Mr Lupu did not give his consent).
Friday 28 May, Smetana Hall, Obecní dům, 8pm
Joseph Haydn: Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra in E flat major, Hob. VIIe:1
Klement Slavický: Moravian Dance Fantasias
Gaetano Donizetti: Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra in G major
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
conductor: Tomáš Hanus
soloist: Gábor Boldoczki, trumpet
34-year-old trumpeter Gábor Boldoczki, winner of the prestigious international competitions Prague Spring and ARD in Munich, will perform two famous concerto works by Joseph Haydn and Gaetano Donizetti during a single concert.
The concert will be broadcast live on Czech Radio 3 Vltava.
