Greetings from America
Rudolfinum, 3 October 2016, 19:30.
This concert, in which UK conductor Stefan Asbury meets New York-based Czech pianist David Kalhous, will deliver an unorthodox cross-section of 20th century American music.
From the visionary Three Places in New England, which Charles Ives began working on in 1903, via Aaron Copland’s Prairie Journal, commissioned by CBS radio in 1936, Leonard Bernstein’s major Second Symphony from the late 1940s, inspired by the Anglo-American poet W.H. Auden’s poem The Age of Anxiety, to the coruscating virtuoso 1990s composition Slonimsky’s Earbox, in which one of the most successful US contemporary composers, John Adams, brings together the influences of Stravinsky and minimalism.
