MOZART – KLUSÁK – HAYDN… at Studio 1
Springtime, which prevails over nature, makes it clear that the end of another concert season for arts institutions is approaching an end. The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra will “begin closing” its jubilee 90th season on Tuesday 11 April, when it will deliver the fourth and final concert in the series “the PRSO lives here” for all who are interested.
Visitors to Studio 1 at the Czech Radio building at Vinohradská 12 and listeners of Vltava are already used to the fact that members of the orchestra traditionally appear as soloists there.
This time it will be the turn of both of the PRSO’s concertmasters, Vlastimil Kobrle and Petr Zdvihal, and the solo oboist Zdeněk Rys. The programme offers an appealing combination of classicist pieces and one opus by a contemporary composer that is nevertheless connected to the legacy of the ingenious Amadeus.
We will begin with Mozart. In the mid-18th century his concertos featuring diverse solo parts enjoyed considerable popularity. The Concertone for Two Violins and Orchestra in C major was conceived in Salzburg in 1774 and provides immense pleasure in the form of elegant, ornate, tuneful and entertaining music. It is more frequently heard on recordings that in concert venues – which makes us all the more pleased to offer you a top class interpretation assured by the two PRSO concertmasters.
The contemporary will be represented at the concert by Jan Klusák, a composer who is also a writer and actor and who possesses such a talent for mathematics that it led him to become a passionate compiler of horoscopes and to convert messages of the stars and astrological calculations into compositions.
His Nostalgia for Mozart was written on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of the musical genius (1991) and is intended for chamber orchestra and customary oboe. It was premiered in Mozart´s home city in February 1992. Let’s hope Jan Klusák himself tells us more about its creation.
Solo oboist Zdeněk Rys will perform the most distinctive part in the closing composition, Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in C Major, a wonderful piece overflowing with invention. He first played it at school and most recently three years ago with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra in Zlín. This time it will be with his “domestic” orchestra.
Jitka Novotná and Vasil Fridrich will helm discussions with the musicians. The concert begins at 19:30 at Studio 1 – and also in a live transmission on the Vltava radio station.
