The PRSO at Prague Spring
The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra is set to perform twice at our country’s most important classical music festival. Within the 69th edition of the Prague Spring international music festival it will partner the finalists in the discipline of violin, which features in the competition for the 12th time.
From 9 May top class violinists from throughout the world will perform accompanied by piano. The final round will then take place at Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall in cooperation with the PRSO and conductor Leoš Svárovský.
Final round participants will be able to choose among the violin concertos of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Jeana Sibelius. The pieces to be played will become clear on 14 May, when the first final round begins at 16:00 and the second at 20:00. Our orchestra is sure to be a substantial artistic and human support to the young competitors this year.
The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra will then return at the very close of the 72nd edition of the Prague Spring on 2 June when, at the Municipal House’s Smetana Hall, it will encounter Krzysztof Penderecki, a living legend of the music world and one of the greatest composers of the second half of the 20th century.
The festival will reach a climax with his monumental Seventh Symphony, subtitled “the Seven Gates of Jerusalem”, which was composed in 1996 on the occasion of grand celebrations of the 3000th anniversary of the existence of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state.
The 83-year-old composer will perform the piece in person with the PRSO, the Slovak Philharmonic Choir and international soloists. Contrasting with the monumental Penderecki symphony will be the joyful, optimistic and playful Serenade for Orchestra by the Czech neo-classical composer Iša Krejčí.
The presence of Krzysztof Penderecki will make the closing concert of the 72nd edition of the Prague Spring festival a special, almost historic event – and the occasion presents the PRSO with an exceptionally important assignment.
The programme of the 72nd edition of the Prague Spring international music festival offers 45 concerts. The broad scope of its dramaturgy will excite lovers of a large orchestral sound and chamber music buffs, aficionados of contemporary music and those who closely follow the latest trends in the interpretation of the music of past epochs.
