Mysterious World of Steven Isserlis
Main guest conductor Tomáš Brauner and leading British violoncellist Steven Isserlis brought together French and Czech music. Ravel’s impressionistic miniature preceded the best work for violoncello and orchestra by the classic of French music of the second half of the twentieth century, Henri Dutilleux, whose piece Tout un monde lointain… (A Whole Distant Word...), taken from Baudlaire’s “The Flowers of Evil”, ushers in its mysterious atmosphere.
Second half of the programme was comprised by two of four symphonic poems based on a collection of ballads Kytice (Bouquet) by Karel Jaromír Erben, which set off Antonín Dvořák’s final creative period.
