Robert Schumann - Konzertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra in F major, Op. 86
The evening commenceed with an extraordinary piece by Robert Schumann, where the “soloist” is the entire horn section, which this time comprises the young and exceptionally talented Czech French horn player Kateřina Javůrková and three other instrumentalists who won awards at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 2016.
Arvo Pärt – Symphony No. 3
First half of the evening concluded with a piece inspired by Medieval music, Symphony No. 3, composed by Joost’s compatriot and one of the most important composers today, Arvo Pärt.
Jean Sibelius – Lemminkäinen Suite, Op. 22
The concert culminated with a fifty-minute suite of four symphonic poems by Jean Sibelius, inspired by the life of the mythical hero Lemminkäinen, who is depicted in The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic.
