The flute, an instrument of both royals and shepherds, is one of the oldest instruments in the history of mankind. The only wind instrument that you just need to breathe into to create a tone. No need for reeds, mouthpieces or other tone-making aids. But any flautist would tell you that this is a different kind of breathing.
To sound the transverse flute one needs to hold the lips correctly, engage the diaphragm and blow into the small hole in the head joint of the instrument. Of course, practice makes perfect. That is the case with every serious endeavour. And tonight’s protagonists are very serious about playing this instrument. They would not be members of this top orchestral ensemble otherwise. Let’s find out what the difference is between creating a simple whistle and creating a noble and beautiful flute tone used to interpret musical works across centuries.

The concert is broadcast live by Czech Radio station D-dur.
